(Norfolk, VA) — CIVIC Leadership Institute is proud to announce the 2026 recipients of the prestigious Darden Award for Regional Leadership in advance of the 21st Annual Darden Awards. This year’s honorees recognize two extraordinary examples of leadership and service in Hampton Roads. Distinguished public servant, U.S. Navy veteran, and respected newspaper executive R. Bruce Bradley will receive the Individual Darden Award for Regional Leadership, while W. M. Jordan Company, a nationally recognized construction firm with deep roots in Hampton Roads, will receive the Corporate Darden Award for Regional Leadership. The awards will be presented on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at Hilton Norfolk The Main, with TowneBank proudly serving as the Presenting Sponsor.
R. Bruce Bradley – Individual Darden for Regional Leadership Honoree:
The 2026 Individual Darden Award for Regional Leadership honors R. Bruce Bradley, whose distinguished career reflects a lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and strengthening the Hampton Roads region he proudly calls home.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Bruce graduated from Villanova University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant (junior grade) and navigator aboard the USS Charleston. Following his military service, he built a distinguished 34-year career with Landmark Communications, serving as advertising director of The Roanoke Times and the Greensboro News & Record, President and Publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, and President of Landmark Publishing. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation for principled leadership, strategic vision, and an unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence.
Bruce’s impact extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. As Rector of Old Dominion University, he helped guide one of the region’s most important institutions through a period of growth and transformation.
Together with his wife, Lilly, Bruce established the Bruce and Lilly Bradley Distinguished Research Fellowship in Coastal Resilience, reflecting their shared commitment to advancing research and preparing future generations of leaders. Bruce also earned an MBA from Old Dominion University, received an honorary doctorate in 2010, and was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015.
His legacy of community leadership includes serving as board chair of many of Hampton Roads’ most influential nonprofit organizations, including the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, Hampton Roads Chamber, YMCA of South Hampton Roads, United Way of South Hampton Roads, ACCESS College Foundation, and the Elizabeth River Project. Through decades of volunteer leadership, philanthropy, and civic engagement, Bruce has helped shape a stronger, more connected region.
Bruce and Lilly have been married for 53 years and are the proud parents of two children and grandparents of eight grandchildren. Together, they have exemplified a life of service, generosity, and leadership.
